The Struggle is Real!

February 17, 2020

It has been a long time! The holidays are a tough time and I have really struggled with doing anything lately. I haven’t done any paper crafting lately, haven’t made any cards, haven’t made any new YouTube videos. As some of you may know, my oldest son passed away almost three years ago. Some days the depression hits harder than others. Trying to get out of my funk and get inspired to do anything has been difficult lately. Normally crafting has been like therapy to me. Making myself get into my craft room to create has been a struggle, not to mention it’s messy and I need to clean up in order to make room so I can create. It’s an endless cycle....anyone else struggle to clean up your craft space so you can create??

I recently bought an IPad. I have been playing with the Procreate app. I am a beginner, but I find it easy to pick up my iPad and just play around when I am in a good enough mood...no cleaning necessary. When I noticed myself getting into this mood at Christmas time I joined the ShowMeYourDrills challenge to learn calligraphy. It has been a way for me to force myself to do something small everyday and not feel overwhelmed. This way I can feel like I have completed something, even if it may be small and it helps with my mood slightly....better than nothing. I have recently finished the drills challenge and am now working on lower case letters. I have been posting my practice daily (almost always daily) on my IG (@elephantshoecorner).

Today I made the graphic above. I love this quote and felt like it was really fitting today. As I mentioned above my oldest son passed away almost three years ago. This make holidays very difficult, which is why I haven’t done much paper crafting in the past few months. Yesterday, would have been his birthday. The days leading up to his birthday were difficult this year as they have been in the past. I found the quote, “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” This quote inspired me to get a little creative.

If you ever struggle with depression or just have tough days. Please try to do one small thing...anything. It doesn’t have to be calligraphy or crafting. Find something that works for you. Take baby steps. And know that you are strong enough to make it through the day....easier said than done. And I don’t always take my own advice, but I hope that this has helped one person that reads it. Thank you for your patience when it takes me a while in between blog posts and new projects.
